#Summary - So, How did it feel to be a pre-service teacher?

Thanks God, for all the blessings I received. I knew, it was You! 💛

One month which was full of precious moments and experiences has passed. Things that I got during the program were unexpectedly beyond my expectations.  So, the following article is my writing to summarize every things about this program.

Procedures of Practicum
Based on the requirement, the pre-service teacher have to meet 20 hours meetings in one month of the program. The cooperating school had arranged our (SEA-teachers participants) schedule as well as the activities during one month of program in order to help us meet the objectives. There are four stages that we had during the practicum. They were:

  • Stage 4: Reflection of student teachers' performance in general

At first, I thought that this would be a tough month for me. Yes, it was. But, all of efforts were worthy. Each stage has its own moments which were priceless to be remembered. You can click the link above to read more about my stories during the program.

The challenges of Practicum
Teaching English in an ESL country is such a great challenge for an EFL teacher just like me. Besides learning how to manage the classroom activities, as the teacher, mastering the topics is a must for me before I delivered it to my students. The pressure that I got was increased when I knew that I had to facilitate students with African literature as the topic being discussed. Luckily, I had a kindhearted cooperating teacher who guided me patiently so I could make a better progress in each meeting. His suggestions really helped me in overcoming the nerve. You can read my full story about the challenges that I had during my teaching practicum here. Overall, the challenges were all about time and classroom management.

Outcomes of Practicum
I'd like to thank to SEAMEO and Tanjungpura University for supporting me as one of participants in this program. This was such an honor for me for being one of the representatives. Words could not describe how grateful I am for being given this  precious opportunity! 😊 This program has changed and taught me a lot in many aspects.

Besides developing my teaching skills and pedagogy, this program has also improved my English communication skills. I was aware that I had to maintain good communication with every ones, and the only way to communicate to each other was using English - mixed a short simple Tagalog sentence, of course😁. As an adage said, " With language, you can be at home anywhere." YES. FOR SURE. THIS COUNTRY HAS BECOME MY ANOTHER HOME 💞

This program has taught me to see the world from new perspectives. I used to think that going abroad and being the foreigners who stayed for a period of time in another country would be a terrifying experience, especially when I was being the minority in that place. But, all of those negative thinking were tackled  down as I experienced it by myself, through this program. I do love to be here, in Philippines. Every ones here are warm and kind. There were no barrier between us. I do love to answer all of their curiosities about Indonesia, especially when they asked us about Islam. I have always believed that the only way to avoid misinterpretation is by communicating, and we did it well. We respected each other. They made me believe that good people are still exist, that going abroad is not as frightened as what was I imagined.

The diversity that I experienced, had taught me to be more open minded. During the program, we stayed at RSTC hostel together with other students exchanges from Vietnam, Thailand, and China (they joined different programs). As a human being, different persons will have their own unique characteristics. Moreover, we were from different countries which was making us having differences in customs, too. Luckily, we could cope with all of those differences and got along very well💛 We cooked. We shared. We laughed. We encouraged each other. I was proud to say that this program has given me beyond my expectations. I was not only making new friends but also new family here, in Philippines.

Suggestions for Future Improvement
In my opinion, one month is such a short time to learn every things. It would be better if the program is held for two months. By considering to the school calendar, there might be some school agendas which are held in the same month when the student teachers are having their teaching practicum. It would make one month is less effective to develop students teachers' teaching pedagogy. If it is held in two months of program, the student teachers can get more experiences both in teaching practices and the cultural enrichment.

My overall impression for this program is GREAT. Being one of participants in this program was an honor opportunity for me. It was not only teaching experiences that I got, but also new family, new friends, relations, challenging adventures, knowledge, and valuable moments.
Start from now on, this country - especially this lovely city - has become my another home. Every times I heard the news related to this country, it would make me feel like I am part of them. Wish that I will have another chance to meet my family here again. See you when I see you, every ones! I love you!💖

For those who are interested to join this program, I am strongly recommended you to take this opportunity. Perhaps, what I had got would be different with yours later. But, I can guarantee that all of the efforts will be worth it, and you will treasure those experiences just like what I did, even more.
