#Observation - Teaching English in ESL Classroom

On August 7th, all of student teachers were invited to attend another orientation regarding to the program at the USHS registered room. The orientation was about explaining the schedule and important papers that we need to submit at the end of the program. That was also our first time for being introduced to our cooperating teachers formally!😍

Another benefit of coming in the beginning of new school year was that I could observe how the teacher made plans in teaching.

During the first week, we were given chances to observe how our cooperating teachers conduct the lesson in the classroom. I had Sir Joseph, who teaches English for grade 8 and 12 students, as the cooperating teacher. Even tough I would only have grade 8 students to have the teaching practice at, Sir Joseph kindly allowed me to observe the teaching activities in grade 12 students too. So, I could learn about the differences between conducting the lesson in lower and upper grades. How lucky I was! 😁

Planning for Teaching
The course title for English 8 subject is Communication Arts II and Afro-Asian Literature. YAP! Most of the topics being discussed will be about literature. Even for the grammar lessons, the students will be taught to apply what they have learned (grammar) by referring to the literature being discussed.

The time allotment for English 8 is 5 hours per week with (one hour in a day). Based on the syllabus, there are five to six topics that should be discussed in every quarter. In discussing the topics, the teacher can manage whether to discuss all of  topics in sequence (as stated in the syllabus), to shuffle it, or even combine some topics when it is considered necessary.

Before conducting the lesson, the teacher will prepare the teaching plan first to make everything's well-organised. The teacher guide used in University Science High School is the semi-detailed lesson plan. The format is shown below.
The Format of Semi-detailed Lesson Plan

Basically, the main activities in the lesson plan are the same as in Indonesian. Every activities which are prepared by the teacher must aim to meet the objectives at the end of the lesson. The teacher sometimes provides motivations activities, such as games or quizzes, to attract students' interests as well as train their critical thinking of the topics being discussed.

Teaching in Class
Based on the observation during the first week of the program, I found that the teacher implements the eclectic approach in teaching and learning process. This approach is adopted due to students' needs where they are learning English as the second language. The teacher would like to use Total Physical Response (TPR) to encourage students to actively participate during the lesson.

For it was the first week of new school year, the teacher settled a class agreement for English 8 lesson with the class in their first meeting. He would like to remind the students about the rules before starting the lesson, such as English Policy Only (they couldn't use Tagalog during English lesson), the class participation (no passive class, spread the positive energy), etc,.
Observation on the teacher
I was amazed to see the way the teacher interacts with students. He brought an enjoy and positive atmosphere in the class. The students were also so cooperative. I loved to see their positive attitudes towards the lesson 😁

Learning Materials and Sources
For materials, the teacher uses books that he got from government. He also has his personal books as a guidance in teaching the literature (I has read it in a glance and was falling in love with it. There are many interesting stories there (。’▽’。)♡)

In delivering materials, the teacher used PowerPoint presentation, short videos, or music as the media. He often innovated the activities to make it fun and enjoyable for students.

Measurement and Evaluation
At the end of the lesson, there will be an evaluation stage which includes valuing of lesson discussed. The purpose is to measure whether the objectives of lesson discussed are achieved or not by students. The evaluation could be in form of a short item test with 10 to 20 comprehension questions, or by giving an exit paper with a simple comprehension  question in it.

In measuring and evaluating students, the teacher adopts three criteria for grading based on DepEd Order #8, s. 2015. Those criteria are:
1. written works (30%) which include seat-works, quizzes, and chapter tests,
2. performance tasks (50%) which include recitation and projects, and
3. quarterly assessment (20%).

As I had explained about USHS measurement and evaluation system in the previous post, the students are also required to obtain a rating of 80% as the qualifying mark in English 8 subject.

During this one week of observation, I found that all of USHS students are jolly and have strong motivations in learning (YES! ALL OF THEM😀). They know their responsibilities, so they will do their best efforts in completing all of tasks, especially for the performance task (I loved their positive attitudes in completing the task given). The following is one of the performance task given by the teacher. They were doing well! Their performances really made my day!!😎

One week has passed, and the upcoming week will be my turn to stand in front of those students as their teacher. It will be my chance to practice what I have learned...wish me doing well >.<
